Feature Request: Native Desktop/Window Screen Sharing for Steam Chat for party games like Jackbox
Dear Steam Development Team,
I am a long-time user who values the Steam client for its streamlined, utility-first approach to gaming. I am writing to propose the addition of a native "Share Desktop/Window" feature within the Steam Chat/Friends list interface.
Currently, while Steam has excellent "Remote Play" features for gaming, there is no low-latency, native way to share a general desktop window or a web browser with friends. This forces users like myself to rely on secondary, resource-heavy social platforms just to share simple experiences like party games (e.g., Jackbox) or collaborative projects.
Why this is important:
Consistency & Simplicity: Keeping communication and shared screen functionality within the Steam ecosystem would allow for a cleaner, more focused experience without the need for additional, bloated software running in the background.
Reduced Latency: A native Steam implementation would likely offer a more optimized, lower-latency connection than third-party screen-sharing tools, which is critical for party games where timing and responsiveness are essential.
Platform Integrity: Many of us are looking for a more authentic, "utility-only" digital space. By providing this feature, you would allow us to keep our social gaming experiences contained within the platform where our libraries already reside.
I believe this addition would greatly improve the quality of life for the Steam community, particularly for those of us who prefer a more streamlined, "game-centric" social experience. Thank you for your time and for all the work you do to keep Steam as the gold standard for PC gaming. I just feel this would optimise the party game experience like Jackbox in steam game chat
Best regards,
