thank GOD the friggin Ubisoft launcher is dead and gone! I CAN FINALLY PLAY THIS GAME AFTER BUYING IT AGES AGO AND FORGETTING WHAT UBISOFT ACCT I HAD IT ON. FCK! REST IN HELL, THIRD-PARTY LAUNCHERS.

EDIT: I played, like, 80% of this game on a pirated version so my progress is/was not shown on this Steam copy of the game so it may seem sus to most of you that I "liked" this game when I've barely played more than a week's worth

Best played offline- overwhelming huge- bosses, even micro bosses, are difficult - and you will die A LOT+++ OVERWHELMINGLY HUGE+ bosses are difficult, making victory all that much sweeter, fulfilling! (you can learn from your countless deaths; just take a step back from a difficult boss or level or region, grind a bit somewhere else, and just come back once you've cooled your head) You could also try cheesing the bosses :P keyword: TRY.+ environmental storytelling reminds me of Rockstar's openworld games, with a gothic twist <3+ your patience and keen eyes (and ears) tend to be rewarded+ great mount controls+ smooth combat controls (imo)+++ the world is really well put together

Not recommended for medievalist RPG lovers looking for something like TES:Skyrim. The controls, mechanics, atmosphere and 'attitude' - its feel - leans more towards Mount And Blade.

Here are most of the points I've heard streamers complain about and/or praise in the same breath ::

> no console commands :P
> janky as all hell but it adds to the charm and challenge
> choices matter. You can reload, but goodluck reloading if you haven't saved manually in a while; the game only typically autosaves after you've accepted a quest and after you've finished it.
> THE SAVE SYSTEM REQUIRES YOU TO HAVE A CERTAIN TYPE OF POTION - which you can either make yourself, but the ingredients are rare, or buy, but it's pricey - IN YOUR INVENTORY, or a bed that's not privately owned by someone already
> The story is a slow burn
> you can't just flail your weapon around like in AC:Valhalla / AC:Odyssey and expect to win, unless you're very VERY lucky and your enemy has low stamina. Combat requires you to focus on your enemy and watch where you attack, because if they parry your attack and you weren't expecting it, you dead.
> you might feel the game "doesn't respect your time" because its 'wait time' makes you watch the ..clock.. slowly rotate; the fast-travel - which you cant do if you're over-encumbered - makes you watch your character's icon slowly move across the map. Sometimes you encounter hard-to-kill enemies on the way, too, WHILE FAST-TRAVELLING, so there you go..
> dark as hell at night, which is understandable. There's a torch and potion to counteract it tho.
> if you're good with the sword, and have been focusing solely on that, you're probably not good with the axe and gonna die in battle if you use it suddenly.
> no crosshair for archery :P
> there are easter eggs, hidden treasures, graves you can dig, foods and wine you can poison, bandit camps you can raid, ruins you can check out, merchants you can rob blind at night.
> if you have a dagger, you can stealth kill bandits who havent noticed you yet. Even when they're sleeping at their camps. But if you don't have a dagger, you can only knock them out first, and THEN kill them with whatever weapon you have in hand - which might wake up all the other bandits in the camp.
> and you can get drunk. Very very drunk.

Depending on how you entered (or re-entered) the franchise; if you start Odyssey, expecting the same gameplay and theme and enclosed feeling and aesthetic as the original AC games like Brotherhood then you'll be disappointed.

But if you start Odyssey, expecting an RPG with a leveling system and skill trees and is somewhat unfamiliar (or not that fond) with how the original AC games play out, then you'll be fine.

Odyssey is ::

>> BLOATED but CHILL... Which I actually appreciated because I fired up the game when I was exhausted by some fast-paced strategy games.

>> VAST... you can go from one point to another on the map on horseback, with auto-steering, and you'd have time to maybe wash the dishes, brew some coffee and whatnot...

>> the side characters are FUN... Ever tried debating philosophy with Sokrates himself?

Well worth the 230++ hours I've spent infiltrating forts and tipping the balance of power in ancient Greece, fighting the Minotaur, Medusa herself, Cyclopses.. cyclopsii? .... The Nemean Lion from the trials of Herekles itself.

I've been looking for a worthwhile equal to this gem of a game ever since I finished it AND its books.

Points I liked:
> detailed environment with plenty of visual storytelling if you look close enough
> Geralt makes random comments on certain random encounters or just in passing
> monsters actually do require strategy and certain mixes of playstyles
> armor combos and stat boosts if you perfect the set
> HUGE map
> Gwent: a nice game within a game; once you figure out the gameplay of it, you're gonna be hunting for the cards forever.
> the audio and the music is superb; [NON-STORY SPOILER] but the first time you enter Skellige, the game plays a haunting rendition of 'fhir an bhata' - a gaelic folk song. BEAUTIFUL.
> plenty of sidequests that condones thorough exploration.
> has some of the best gags I've seen squeezed into a serious story

> attempt to conquer Ireland
> accidentally conquer Scotland and established the Kingdom of Alba
