A love letter to video game culture
Holy moly, so this DELTARUNE game might just be peak…
DELTARUNE is one of the best experiences I've had with not just gaming, but fiction as a whole. It recaptures everything I love about video games and it's surrounding culture into what fittingly feels like a total fever dream but just isolated entirely on my desktop pc, ironicly because it actually is (Thanks Toby Fox's Fever Dream!). The game just feels so… alive? Everything radiates fun and whimsy, but most importantly passion! There’s a reason people have been playing this game for almost 10 years now, and I can’t wait to see the final vision Toby Fox and his incredible team have been working towards all this time!

HEY! DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL! I'VE STILL GOT PRAISES TO GIVE...
The cast of characters in DELTARUNE is incredebly diverse (both returning and new), each with their own memorable designs, distinct personalities and realistic motivations and interactions. They've got a charm you know is only possible because of the people behind the scenes pouring their own love and souls into them. And the best part is that they all work together to craft a world that feels alive and actually lived in, without needless overexposition that plagues modern games.

The writing is witty and self-aware, balancing its use of the meta narrative with on the nose quips, or even characters brushing over meta elements rather than drawing too much attention their way. The main plot is explained neatly for a casual audience, but doesn't bore enthusiasts by laying breadcrumbs (Sans i swear to god) that hint at deeper and darker mysteries to be uncovered (Honestly there's so many of these mysteries like just do one youtube search for "Deltarune theory" and you'll see what I mean). It's got a story that you can get however much involved into as you want, which I find incredible.

The gameplay is similarly constructed, based off of UNDERTALE's take on RPG mechanics (which itself was a unique take on the classic RPG), that gets toyed with or completely altered with each encounter, not to mention the additional mechanics introduced with each new chapter... It keeps the game feeling fresh, and that uncertainty of what is possible keeps me HOOKED! The game doesn't just have one gimic, its gimic is constantly introducing new gimics that each again play with the idea of what exactly a game is (to us as the player, but also to the characters within the story ( yes im talking about device theory )

Oh and the MUSIC. I genuinley cannot express how much I love Toby Fox's music. The soundtrack captures so much life and energy to the point where a playing a single motif can change you're entire perspective on a scene. The music, like the characters and world, has so much personality, and somehow each major motif is able to evoke a completely different response from eachother (especially impactful whenever contrasting motifs are used to create conflict, I don't know how to put it into words but its just phenomenal). The arrangements are beautiful and pair perfectly with the rest DELTARUNE's elements.

I could go on... and maybe I'll update this review in the future, but for now all I want to say is this: If you're reading this you probably play games a fair amount, and I think DELTARUNE is the perfect game for literally anyone to try and and enjoy even a little bit, cause guess what, CHAPTERS 1 & 2 ARE COMPLETELY FREE!!! so if you want my advice, I'd say TAKE THE DEAL and give DELTARUNE a shot, cause hey...

DELTARUNE IS WAITING...
