After 10 years of development, Nocturne is now available on Steam.

Launch Editions

Nocturne launches with three editions:

Base Game
Supporters Pack Bundle (include custom noteflares, columns and a Pillbug Pet!)

Bugs & Feedback

The team will be monitoring the game closely after launch, if there's any major bugs or issues we're ready to push hotfixes. If you encounter any issues in the game, no matter how small, please use the in-game bug reporting tool! It will send a message right to my inbox with a copy of your save file, which is very useful for figuring out what went wrong! Nocturne

Last fight (spoilers obvi)

sooooo...... I've been trying to beat the second fight with the big bad.... even on the easiest level, I cannot seem to regen enough health, or more importantly, reposite with the katana at all, damage is immediately after the wind up and I either crit then take 4 damage, or swing as they damage me. Am i missing something obvious?...

Minor Hotfixes

Just a few small fixes from the feedback so far. If you have any bugs or issues please use the in game "Bugs & Feedback" tool!

- Fixed a treasure chest in Chapter 6 being stuck under the floor.
- Fixed a bug with the credits on main menu not reaching the end before resetting.
- Fixed Next Objective dialogue failing to trigger in some specific situations.
- Small chapter 3 dialogue change: Kimothy now says "us" instead of "we" when talking about what Kai said.
- New Item: The Swift Katana, an upgrade to the Ancient Katana has replaced one of the Capacitor chests in Chapter 5
- New Item: The Featherlight Katana, an upgrade to the Swift Katana, has been added with a new chest in Chapter 7.

This game is truly special. I'm only just going into Chapter 4 and god, every area is massive and so beautifully done, the combat is so fun it makes me run into enemies instead of trying to evade them, the music - MY GOD the music is absolutely incredible. If you are on the fence about getting this game, GET IT. You don't want to miss it.

I'll expand on this some other time but this game is too good to not recommend right away. Suffice to say, I have minor gripes (hurriedly enumerated below, major spoilers), but this game does far more right than it does wrong. Absolutely worth playing, no need to wait for a sale.

The relationship between Kimothy and Karma goes from 0 to 11 very quick. By the end of the very first chapter, Karma is willing to risk his life to save Kimothy and pledges to always protect him. Given that they met a day ago, this was pretty dang fast. Yes, there are story reasons why this relationship develops the way it does but I still think we would've benefitted with a slower burn.
Yako / Kitsune has a really cool character arc! I just wish we saw more of his progression from A to B. When we leave him in chapter 1, he's pledging revenge against us. When we next see him, he's a chill barn fox willing to adventure. It also feels kinda uncharacteristic for him to not join us in the ending given his whole "protector fox" aspiration and growing friendship with Kimothy. I think the adventuring dialogue would've felt much more dynamic if we had three characters in the party instead of just Karma and Kimothy.
Echoing the above two bullet points, most relationships would've benefitted from a slower burn. The cast so rarely gets to engage in character building outside of plot development. Side content would help alleviate this, although I understand it's easy for a player to say "this game would be better if we had MORE of it". Eventually you do have to actually release something!
Ladder climbing speed. It's too damn slow.
Sprinting speed. It's too damn slow.
Void chapters. The enemies are too damn similar.
By the latter half of the game, the game develops much more of a "walking simulator" feel. We'll go from A, to B, then have someone at B tell us we should go to A. Ugh, please don't.
Instead of a contrived (but charming) hide and seek sequence, wouldn't the introduction of Kitsune's barn be more organic if we ran by it while riding the Stag back to Yama? Also would help alleviate the boring walking.
Was it ever explained why the entryplace became dilapidated after Karma left it in the intro?
I wish the game spent more time diving into the moral and philosophical implications of mind uploading and corporate ownership. Everyone seems chill with knowing they're not the "real" version of themselves and aside from some mentions of "so this is how it feels to die" we don't explore how different characters coped or rationalized that incredibly traumatic moment. How about some more edge cases? Did someone ever upload their mind before death? How has brain uploading tech influenced the real world? Could you upload muliple copies of the same character?
The Kai and Nocturne fights. I wouldn't say they're spikes in difficulty (the only mechanical difficulty is charting, and those fights are comparable), but both require you to actually engage with the equipment in a way no other fight requires. It really comes out of left field. Every encounter up until this point can be resolved with "just rhythm better". I don't dislike being forced to engage with the equipment system, but I dislike where it occurs. We should either have more enemies that require specialized builds leading up to the final boss OR tweak the damage numbers on those two fights. (Riposting the final boss was fun though! I have no clue how you could possibly do it with riposting, which feels mean.)
I really wish there was an epilogue of some kind where we either learn the ultimate fate of Maya or see how the characters react towards Karma's decision. I chose to save Maya but I was disappointed Sue never confronted us about it in the end.
How has Maya continued to run if a) they can't communicate with the real world and b) nobody else can be uploaded? This would drastically impact the revenue of Standard Innovations and they're not likely to keep running the servers needed for Maya out of their kindness of their hearts. I know the real world isn't the focus of the story but I would have liked to see answers alluded to more, or at least people ponder the questions.
There isn't much "secret" dialogue to reward the player for leaving the critical path. Want to see Ellen in her jail cell before leaving Yama? Sorry, she's so shamed she's now mute. Want to chat with Asayla during the second blackout for her thoughts on the matter? Sorry, best she can offer is a shop menu.
I ran into several situations where I couldn't walk through some piece of the map that I needed to, usually interior stairs and an arch in Wei's memories. I had to walk away from the terrain and walk back. This is the only true bug I observed in the game, which is pretty good!

Can't Find Enemy (Chapter 3)

I've finished Chapter 3, and I can't find the Ladybug enemy.... where is it? I've gone back through that chapter's area and can't find it. Does anyone remember the general area it's in?

Talking to the old man then the screen turning black

When i was leaving maya to head towards the forest then you get that dialogue with that old guy and his wife it was going normal then suddenly the main character karma goes towards the rock crystal guy and says like what there's someone inside we got to get him out and the old was like oh you didn't know let's go in my house and talk inside then he takes me inside and my screen goes black i just hear background music and walking it's so weird....

Lag in the Combat

Hey, all of a sudden I started experiencing lag during the combat. I had played a few hours and had never experienced it, so I don't really know why it's happening now. Any suggestions to fix it? I turned off battle animations in the settings and it didn't change anything...
