Update 1.0.5: UI Rework, Balancing & Bugfixes

Oct 23

Hello Emperors!

This update brings a complete rework of the user interface, a round of balancing changes, and several bugfixes. Many of these changes come directly from your feedback. Thank you!

UI Rework

Reworked the entire UI to have a consistent visual style that fits the game better.
The UI now scales properly with window size and resolution.
The UI scale factor setting moved to the expert section of the settings (in most cases, it should no longer be needed).
The game now uses a custom cursor (size can be configured)

Quality of Life

Completing the tutorial is no longer required to start the first real campaign mission.
New option to show nebula outlines for better visibility (disabled by default, can be enabled in the settings).
Added unit autoqueue and the option to pre-queue technologies and upgrades. To toggle it, middle-click a button in the build menu.
Mouse edge scrolling is now optional (enabled by default).
Missing resources for construction or research are now highlighted in red.

Balancing

Tech Tree

Removed the Biology Lab. Its only research option, "Urban Agriculture", was removed.
"Urban Planning" now unlocks both the City and Metropolis upgrades.
Added two new Chemistry techs that increase resource production of buildings.

Buildings

Nuclear Power Plant: electricity 400 → 500.
Solar Power Plant: upgrade costs increased by 50 metal each.
Defense Platform: population 1 → 4, increased cost, slower recharge time.

Units

Heavy Hunter: cost 45 metal → 50 metal.
Super Heavy Hunter: cost 50 metal + 10 deuterium → 80 metal + 30 deuterium.
Destroyer: population 1 → 2.
Hangar ships: population 0 → 2.

Campaign

Improved difficulty scaling in the Asteroid Belt mission. The easier settings are now significantly easier.

Bugfixes

Fixed a rare crash when loading a game while the AI was updating.
Fixed tech upgrades not applying correctly to stats with a starting value of zero.
After a tech upgrade, only units and buildings that actually changed get highlighted.
If the game fails to start, it now writes more details to crash.txt and startup.txt. On Windows, an error message is shown. If you have startup problems, please send us these files!
Sound effects now correctly follow the volume settings.
Fixed a crash at startup on Linux when the sound driver reports an invalid buffer size.

Thank You!

A big thank you to everyone who plays the game and takes the time to give feedback, report bugs and post suggestions in the forums. Your input shaped a large part of this update.

What's Next?

The next update will focus on more options for skirmish and map settings, as well as AI improvements.

Thanks for playing!

my thoughts of how game might become a little bit better

1. The Demo doesn't say what you will unlock if you buy the game, like more races, custom world gen. 2. Primitive AI. 3. Laggy particle effects (the game doesn't suggest you disable them once your FPS drops, which means many players might just drop the game as "laggy" instead of going to settings). 4. Inability to queue upgrades for buildings that are still in the building process (T1->T2->T3 instead of waiting for T1, then T1->T2, then T2->T3). 5. Inability to customize map generation. 6. Very useless sub...

Tutorial Colony Ship - Not Sure What To Do?

Am I being a herp-derp, or is there a hilarious bug? I am playing the tutorial. I have built the Colony ship and sent to to the second planet. The tutorial says to select the colony ship and right-click a field marked as colonizable. There are no markings on the planet. I have right-clicked every spot on the planet and the colony ship just flies around doing nothing. It is also unclear what a "field" is... given that is, in real life, a type of terrain on a planet... a field/meadow. Maybe a bad word to use...

More Bugfixes and Improvements

Oct 2

Hi everyone,

thank you to everyone who bought Empires of a Tiny Universe. A special thank you goes to those who took the time to report bugs and share feedback. Almost everything in this patch comes from your reports.

Bug fixes

Campaign mission "First Contact": Fixed the error pop-ups. Also fixed a rare case where a star spawned on top of the target planet, which made the mission impossible to finish. Please note: the fix only works when you start the mission again. Saved games from this mission still have the old problem.
Tutorial: Fixed a bug where the tutorial could not be finished if you researched the Advanced Cruiser Upgrade too early. This fix also works with saved games.
Fixed several smaller bugs in the missions "Hostile Relatives", "A Fortress between the Stars" and "Rescue Mission".
Geothermal power plants no longer take damage from volcanic eruptions.
A single click was sometimes treated as a double click and selected many units at once. This happened most often while the game was paused. It is fixed now.
Clicking into a tight group of ships now selects only the ship closest to the cursor.

Quality of life

Unit selection: Enemy units are no longer selected together with your own.
New selection modifiers: Hold Shift to add to your current selection, Ctrl to select only civilian ships, Alt to select only military ships, and B to select only buildings. You can change all four keys in the settings.
Resource bar: The numbers now have a dark outline, so they stay readable on bright backgrounds.
Income tooltips: Hover a resource to see your income per minute and how many buildings and units are working on it. Hover the population to see what provides and what uses population space.
The main menu now shows the version number in the top right corner.

Still in the works

Some of your requests did not make it into this patch. They are not forgotten, and I am working on them.

Feedback

If you find a bug or have a suggestion, please open a discussion in the Community Hub. I read all of it and I am happy to keep improving the game.

If you enjoy the game, please consider leaving a review. It helps me out a lot.

Thanks for playing!
