Virtue and a Sledgehammer

Is the game actually good?

I scroll through the reviews, and none of them are talking about the gameplay, but instead the narrative, and how it'll make you cry. The only other time I see reviews like this, is for doomed yuri visual novels, but at least those are dozens of hours long to justify their prices. Meanwhile, this doesn't have any reviews with over 3 hours in it. How could a 3 hour story game that seems mainly focused on smashing things, actually have a story that good? How could it make you "question life" as some reviews...

Tear it all down in Virtue and a Sledgehammer!

Oct 27

Our moody and violent—and hopefully cathartic—narrative exploration game is finally out. Brace yourself and get into Virtue and Sledgehammer, ready to tear down some walls, smash a motley bunch of robots, and face some complicated emotions.

Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour started collaborating back in 2022, and 4 years later, after many experiments and tribulations, Virtue and a Sledgehammer is the culmination of our joint efforts.

We're exhausted but extremely excited and dare say proud of having birthed this weird and angry thing. We sincerely hope that you connect with what we tried to do here.

Play it now! Let us know what you think! <3

Thank you for all the support!

I STILL LOVE YOU MORE THAN I HATE YOU

This game isn't cathartic because you're destroying things. It's cathartic because somebody out there is communicating they're as angry as you are.

Virtue: Prologue, free short interactive fiction!

Oct 22

Hello!

In anticipation of Virtue and a Sledgehammer's release on October 27, we're releasing a short interactive fiction to introduce you to some characters and themes of the game.

If you distance your heart enough from any lie, you can make it real.

The mind is a funny thing, ready to unearth unexpected memories right before you face the most crucial day of your life.

Navigate the complicated feelings surrounding your first love: a summer fling with a hot, rich boy from Barcelona. Sneak to the graveyard at night to smoke with your sister, or climb a tree and have edgy conversations in this coming-of-age story.

Discover what transpired in the moments leading up to the car crash that opens our violent exploration game Virtue and a Sledgehammer. An ideal companion to the main game, whether you're getting ready to play it for the first time or if you were left wanting to know more about its world and characters.

At Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour, we've trusted underground rising star from the Spanish indie scene, Juno Menager[juno-menager.itch.io], to craft an artistic and experimental novella to flesh out the characters we built in our hammering catharsis simulator, serving as both a prelude and an integral piece for understanding Virtue and a Sledgehammer's big picture.

Available for free at Pantaloon's Playbill![playbill.pantaloon.io]

Let us know what you think if you happen to play it!

Despite it's subject matter, the question's and ideas behind it, I find this game is Excessively so, Human. It fall's Extremely close to emotions, thoughts, and Idea's I find could be considered primal to the very being of who many of us are, or how we view the world. I thoroughly Recommend this game.

This game is beautiful. There's no other way to put it. It feels wrong to sum it down into some bullet points, but I'll do so just for the sake of summary
- It's a walking sim, the gameplay isn't too amazing, but it's inoffensive
- The visuals are fantastic, there were many moments where I just stopped and gazed for a while
- The music and sound design was peak. I expect nothing less from Fingerspit (and holy, surprise Beicoli appearance?)
- The story is peak. You will cry, you will question your beliefs, you will struggle with empathising not only with people turned into androids, but also with the messy love of a family with abuse

The game aims, as far as I've read and seen, to be a critique on modern "AI". Weirdly, while I can definitely see it in retrospect, it did not hit like that for me. Instead, it made me question my beliefs of what makes a person, and what the limits of transhumanism could be. Before I played, I thought that while an incredibly difficult and improbable task, some kind of "Ghost in the Shell" kind of vibe would inevitably be possible long into the future, and embracing that as a society could be very powerful and freeing.

Now I'm not so sure. Now I wonder just how much of a person you can replace with a machine until they're no longer themselves. The game took me through memories and arguments and frustrated inner dialogue that picked away at my assumptions. For this alone, I think it's a fantastic game, I love any game that really makes me grapple with myself.

It's just such a rollercoaster too. I was angry, I was sad, I was distraught, I was frustrated. I was..Loved? I cried, the friends who watched me play it cried.

Ah.. I don't even know what else to say. Just go play it. Even for as short as it is, it is so incredibly worth it, and the devs deserve it for putting out banger after banger.

Any way to walk faster?

I really love the story and setting for the game, I'm excited to learn more... But the player character walks soooooooo slow. And the only attack seems to be press/hold mouse 1. I appreciate this is primarily a narrative adventure, but does the game have you learn any more attacks/abilities as you progress? Or honestly just does the character learn to run at some point? I appreciate its my own issues with patience at play here, but I'd probably still buy just for the story even if it was only the one att...

How to get the rarest achievement?

Does anyone know how to unlock the "The Prototype" achievement? It's the only one I missed before beating the game!

bug when collecting memories

After collecting the necessary number of memories the first time around, the sequence progressed as intended, with me getting teleported to the special location with the 4 major red memories to pick from. But the second time I collected enough memories, the game instead immediately put back exactly where I was, but now the lighting and music had changed, and the assets and cutscene triggers in adjacent areas had now largely de-loaded. Collecting further memories did not at all trigger the sequence, and whi...
