v1.1.11 - QoL & Small Fixes

Oct 7

Heya all!

Today, here's a little update with various quality-of-life improvements and a few small fixes (in particular around the annotation tools) :)

Refactors

Levels 23 and 32 switched: I've switched around those two levels to get a better diifficulty curve.

Features

Annotation "text" tool: I've finally implemented it! You were quite a few to request it: you can now click to place a text input, type in text, and then click-and-drag it around. Easier than writing letters by hand ;)
Language pinning: Once you've discovered a specific language (i.e. symbols that replace letters with a 1-to-1 match, like the Pigpen cipher), you'll be able to go to the list of completed levels (marker in the top-left corner) and pin it to the alphabet at the top of your screen in future levels. A quick-and-easy way to re-use the language in new puzzles!
Localized cipher info URLs: When solving a puzzle and checking the extra info on the cipher used, the link will bring you to an internet page in the current game language (when possible).

Fixes

Hints: Various puzzle hints were improved to be clearer and/or more detailed.
Annotation tools: The button is now blocked once you solve a puzzle, and you can use <Esc> to close the "Clear annotations" confirm panel.
UI: Various small fixes.

Level 23 makes no sense

I have tried something like 15 different methods of decryption even trying to follow the (badly written) cipher information, nothing works. In the end I just had to use the ? feature to skip the level. It is incredibly unclear how you are supposed to use the Polybius Square (I assume its just a standard square as there is nothing that gives you a keyword) the chess boards must have to be used separately similar to the order of operations in level 21 otherwise the first 2 ciphertext letters would...

Level 56 - name puzzle

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I'm stumped. I've tried the dev's name as listed on the Steam page plus Red Woman and Blue Queen -- even my own name from my computer settings and the only word I can see formed by the circled letters in all the preceding clues . Help is appreciated! I think this might just be a clue that's not meant to lead to something else, but I could also be wrong. What a pu...

v1.1.10 - QoL improvements

Oct 2

Heya all!

Today, here's a little update with some tweaks and quality-of-life improvements to boost Locktale even more. Big thanks to everyone's who's played and sent feedback 🙏

Features

Level 32: The hints give a bit more info on how to use the level-specific tool :)
UI: Improved the "Reveal Cipher Info" panel that pops after 3 minutes, if you haven't solved the cipher. Up til now, it could be closed by clicking on the background behind it, which sometimes caused people to misclick and close it before they'd even had a chance to read it. Now, you'll need to click an explicit "ok" button - this should make it easier to check out the info in this panel!

Fixes

Level 11: Improvement on the color-blind mode + Small fix in FR translation of the cipher description.
Settings: Settings are now properly saved when you go back using the arrow in the top-left corner + The progress reset option (in the "data" section) properly resets revealed secrets as well.
Misc: Various UI fixes.

Level 45 is undecodable

Does anyone can solve Level 45?

Level 15

I may be missing something obvious but for the life of me I can't figure out the key for puzzle 15. Anyone got an extra hint for me along with the existing one?

some hidden achievements bugged

i've gotten 5/7 keys but have only gotten two key related achievements, only one of which was related to the specific key found. i've opened and closed the game several times now throughout the day after getting them and still nothing :( hopefully after the update tomorrow something will pop! on a related note, if anyone has a tip to find the key on the wheel level & the one waiting on a counter (i think i know which stage this is but not how to reset it to make the counter work again), i'm all ears!...

v1.1.9 - QoL Improvements

Sep 17

Heya everyone!

Here's a new small update with just some quality-of-life features and little improvements :)

Features

Level 19: There are now more detailed hints to help understand how the cipher works.

Fixes

Enigma hints: The showing letter pair hint will keep showing even if the puzzle has already been solved.
Autofill letters: When this option is disabled, special levels that dynamically reload the message won't autofill the letters anymore upon reload.
UI: The list of controls in the main menu settings panel now properly switches color depending on the active theme (dark/light).

Honestly was excited at the start, since it seemed like a fun way to learn about ciphers.

The problem for me came when at a certain point outside knowledge was expected or required. At some point it no longer was a puzzle game, but throwing your head against the wall trying to figure out what the cryptic hints mean until you brute force it and get a fun story about how the cipher that was just used was from some book and used as an alternative for morse code in there.

All fun and games, but with the limited hints you can never figure that kind of stuff out, never mind how to decode it. I got halfway through the game before throwing in the towel. If I cannot reasonably figure something out from in-game hints and I have to use google instead, I'm not really playing a game at that point.

So sadly not for me. But if that sounds like your kind of jam, give it a shot.

Finally finished the entire game!! It is well thought out, but the expectation to go to other levels is difficult to follow as getting there can distract you from the puzzles, especially the last level. I did the mystery achievements last with the keys and tended to overthink them, because they were more on the surface puzzles. The game gave me challenges that I love and a great sense of accomplishment when completed!

EDIT: Update on 2026-10-07 resolves the following problem by specifying the variant.

Part of puzzle 46's detailed hint is EXTREMELY misleading, and eventually forces a brute-force search through all variants of the intended cipher until you chance on an intelligible message. Please encode the message using the variant that was used in previous levels or at least fix the on-screen image.

That said, this is mostly a well-themed series of decryption exercises which barely functions as a game. Would not recommend at all to people looking for actual gameplay, but definitely would recommend to people who fondly reminisce about enciphering and deciphering messages for fun back in their schooldays.
