Dev Update #3 : Difficulty, Quibble + Unlock changes

Oct 25

Hello everyone!

As you may have seen, we deployed another update over the weekend with some more tweaks, balance changes and improvements!

Before I dive into things, a massive thank you from both Shu and me to all of you who have left a review on the demo.

We’ve had a massive number of players join, and our average playtime is very high, so we’re incredibly thankful that you’re all enjoying it! If you haven’t yet, leaving a review really helps us spread the word, and we appreciate all the support so far!

One of the major changes I want to draw attention to is the difficulty. Whilst we’re generally happy with where win rates are trending right now, there has been a lot of feedback regarding the game being “far too easy” for veterans of the genre at the base difficulty.

The game is tuned at +0 difficulty to be a touch easier, helping new players get a good understanding of the game and its systems, while also letting them enjoy some engine-building fun. However, that comes with the drawback of needing to “grind” a few runs to reach a difficulty you’re comfortable with if you’re a more experienced player.

To address this, we’ve tweaked how difficulty is presented, with Easy, Medium and Hard options all unlocked from the start.

From there, Hard+, Hard++, etc. can be progressed through by all you match-making monsters!

Hopefully, this allows for a bit more of a challenge for genre veterans out of the box, while still allowing some progression as you go.

We’ve also revisited the Endless curve and reduced it a touch from the last patch, so more stacking should be possible again!

Thank you everyone, we can't wait to share more later this week!

Full notes, as always, below!

- Shu and Josh

Game Difficulty

Now Easy, Normal, Hard are default unlocked (previous +0 +1 +2)
Endless curve reduced on lower difficulties
Reduce hat price spike on rare hats (round 5 and round 10)

Quibble Rework

Starting deck change: Snowflake -> Cake (Cake is also changed to always +1 turn on Match, see below)
Tiles are now all dealt face up, giving you time to view the board before you start flipping and matching.
- We have player feedback that the opening animation is too long, and the reveal effects aren't really intuitive (especially when Milk tile suddenly pop up from nowhere). There are also some cases where turn start effects happen at the same time as reveal and Ignite particles could cover the tile symbol.
- In our testing, having everything revealed is huge that we feel the consistency gained should compensate the loss of reveal effects. Plus it feels great to take time to remember everything and play a perfect round.
Unlock condition: Win a Perfect Round (No Mismatch).
- Previous Unlock condition (discover 4 different tiles) was too dependent on RNG, plus players need to know that they need this tile discovered in a game. Even when they are found in a booster, it might not be the best time to take it.
- We are trying a new approach so that it can be still challenging if you don't play for it, but there will be good runs that unlock it eventually. Plus a few ways to cheese on easier difficulties.

Balance Changes

Rarity and types
- Mirror: changed to rare. Exponential even if it's only payout.
- Boxing Gloves: changed to rare.
- Crown: gains Shiny (previously Clothing only).
Hammer
- 8 coin. -1 coin Payout each time you purchase a Booster Pack. (Now skipping a booster pack will still trigger it)
Cap, Shirt, Pants
- 3 coin. +2 Bonus if you Match either of the other 2. Additional +3 coin Bonus if you Match both!
Helm, Chestplate, Leggings, Boots
- 2 coin. +1 Payout each time you add a (armor piece) to your deck. Increase this to +2 if you have a full set! (Now works with tiles added from Hat, and Clone Hat)
Screwdriver
- 1 coin. + turns equal to Multi Bar when Matched. Once per Match.
Cake
- New: 3 coin. +1 turn when Matched.
Galaxy
- 1 coin. After stacking a Hat, gain +coin Payout equal to the number of Hats you've stacked.
Crown
- 8 coin. +1 coin Payout each time you add a Shiny, Finance or Structure tile to your Deck. (Now works with tiles added from Hat, and Clone Hat)
Charmed Bonnet, Wind Chime Hat, Snack Cup
- "Consecutive Match Type A and Type B = effect" changed to allow same type to match wording
Lamplighter Helm:
- ANY Match -> Ignite a random set of Monsters on the board.
Silver Helmet:
- Reveal Silver -> +2 bonus to the tile revealed.
Heirloom Hat
- This hat gain +2 Multi each time you use the Litter Box at Shop in this run. Give your first Match +Multi equal to stored. Current: +0 Multi. (Works retroactively)
Noble Crown
- +1 Multi to each (2 stars) tile Matched. +2 Multi to each (3 stars) tile Matched. (this is always the effect and is reword only)

Quality of Life

Deck Viewer got deck stats reporting rarities and types
Change volume in pause menu
Performance optimizations, no more lags when hovering on a hat
Many unlock conditions changed, and you should no longer see them weirdly stuck after playing a game
Remove Yarn Tangle in the codex (since it can't be discovered right now)
Cat selection remembers your previously selected cat and difficulty
Cat and Hat stack now default to zoomed out as the hat tower grows

Dev Update #2 : Endless Scaling + New Stuff Coming Soon

Oct 15

Hey folks!

We’re back again with another Patch! Before I go on however, a MASSIVE THANK YOU from us for all who have played the demo so far. Collectively, we’ve stacked OVER 50,000 HATS! That’s over 5km of hats… thats a HUGE STACK!

If you’re enjoying the demo, just a gentle reminder to please leave a review! It helps us get more visibility on the game, which helps us in return!

As promised, we’re monitoring balance and bugs as they appear, and activley making changes. The BIG change here is to Endless mode. From feedback, we could tell it was taking a bit too long to become meaningful, so we’ve addressed that in this latest patch.

We also have some very exciting things coming next week, so stay tuned! Especially if you like Pirates. And Cats.

All for now!

~Shu and Josh

General

- Endless: instead of a curve that slowly grow to 30K at 25 hats, we now grow to 30K at 20 hats. As a note, we will be looking at the unlock requirements for certain tiles that require stacking 20 hats, and will look to adjust.

- Reduced requirements to unlock Structure tiles

- Remove price variance on booster: it has been a source of confusion and it is frustrating that sometimes you think a pack of 20 cat snacks with 4 sets is better than a pack of 16 cat snacks with 5 sets... Now all price are normalized.

- Numbers display: a lot of displays are updated to show accurate numbers below 10,000 (instead of 1.3K, you can now see if it's really 1,251 or 1,349)

Bug Fixes

- Another attempt to stop lone tiles and tiles in the wrong placements after removing cards in shop

- Booster after a reload should no longer change the content rolled (and in the fix, Game RNG should be more stable overall)

- Goat will get bonus correctly from Clothing and Fruit, not other tiles

- Further reduce scoring animation length on extremely big deck

- Typos (cats actually learned how to spell Ambulance now)

- Various other fixes and tweaks

Balance

- Chilli: got overshadowed by new dice (0, random +1 to +6 when revealed)

- Old: 1, random +1 to +3 when mismatched

- New: 2, +1 bonus to any <c>Food</c> tiles matched after this (copy from old chef hat)

- Frying Pan: as an uncommon, has literally the same effect as Onion but is worse at payout

- Old: uncommon 1, after matching, ignite all food tiles on the board for 1 turn

- New: (move to common) 3, after matching, ignite all food tiles on the board for 1 turn

- Chef Hat

- Old: common 2, +1 bonus to all food matches after this match

- New: (move to uncommon) 1, identify all food after matching (Satellite, but for Food)

-Onion

- Old: 3, after matching, ignite all food tiles on the board for 1 turn

- New: 3, after matching, add 1 bonus to next food match (dragon fruit, but only for food)

- Duct Tape

- Old: 3, collect 2 on reveal

- New: 1, auto-match random set of trinket (shopping basket, convenience store)

Dev Update #1 : Demo Patch 0.9.4

Oct 9

Hey folks!

After a mad sprint to get the Demo out last week on time, Shu and I managed to recharge the batteries a bit and we’re now back, recharged and excited to keep pushing things forward!

We’ve been listening to you all, watching the videos and reading all the great feedback that has come through. One of the major things we wanted to address was the difficulty unlock system.

The Maine Coon in the room - Mew-tation Grind...

So before launch, you did indeed have to grind each Mew-tation level for every Cat. We got some great feedback before we launched, and realised that this wasn’t a great idea (read: no one wanted it). We did, however, feel that players should have a smooth journey when playing a new cat for the first time, which is why we implemented the “Finish a run at +0 to play all unlocked Mew-tation levels”. Basically, play a run with a new cat then you can crank things up to +7 again.

We have found this wasn’t quite communicated as well as it should have been, and became quite confusing… perhaps for no real purpose.

In todays patch, thats all removed, new cats are free to roam on whatever difficulty you like, right out of the gates! Sorry about that minor hiccup!

Theres a bunch more things in todays patch as well, but another I wanted to highlight was our continued approach to make the visual aspect, including sound design for the game, as satisfying as possible. We’ve tweaked the scoring timing effects, we’ve even tweaked how mass +Bonus effects play out the board. I think they look great now, but we’ll continue to improve as we go !

A huge thanks to everyone who has given the Demo a go! We’ve had such a positive response, we love to hear it - we’re so glad you’re enjoying what we’ve made, and we’re looking forward to supporting this for many, MANY cats to come! If you get a chance, we’d love for you to leave a review on the demo (if you don’t mind!). It helps us a lot!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5297290/Cats_and_Hats_Demo/Full patch notes below, I’m sure we missed documenting a few things, but we’ll continue to minor and fix any bugs or crashes that come through!

All for now!

~Shu and Josh

Bug Fixes

Scrub Hat: actually does what it says now
Feedback: properly submit run file
Tooltip won't stay on top of tutorials or pause menu
Clone Hat + shop removal: no longer leaves a lone card in your deck
Fixed a layering issue with deckviewer and tutorials
Serveral text changes.
Fixed a small bug with Ignite.
Fixed a bug with Rainbow paint not owning up as the buff source.
Various other small fixes.

Balance/Chages

Mew-tatation difficulty is global, no need to grind per cat.
Visual effect and sound effect changes in several places.
Lovers Band: increased to +3 Payout.
Multi Bar: Numbers tweaked for Auto-match values, alongside of a boost to consecutive non Auto-match values.
Silverware: +1:coin: Payout if Matched with an adjacent tile (changed Bonus to Payout).
Dice: Random +1:coin: to +6:coin: Bonus when Revealed (changed Matched to Revealed).
Camera: Gain +:coin: Bonus equal to Payout each time this tile is Revealed.
Emerald Key: +1:coin: Bonus for each set of previously Matched Emerald.
King: +1:coin: Bonus each time you Match a set of Shiny tiles. +5:coin: Payout each time you Match a set of Chest tiles.

Cats and Hats

Trouble with 2 unlocks

Hi this game is super fun, ive been able to unlock every hat and tile except the one mentioning rolling snake eyes and the 6th piece of trash (the blue one that looks like yarn) For snake eyes ive gotten +1 on 2 consecutve dice upon reveal, ive tried matching 2 dice conseculetively. ive had 12 dice pairs in my deck. i really dont understand the condition necessary. Could i have a hint?...

Nice demo

Quite fun, enjoyable, and humorous. (If it matters to you, I believe I saw "fleeting" spelled as "fleating" at some point in the early game.) Wish you well with the demo and full release of Cats and Hats.
