Justify Rebellion

(Heavy/Thrash Metal)

Unleashing the Beast (2018)
The Ends Justify the Means (2020)

Justify Rebellion is a danish quartet that plays some thrashy heavy metal. Their debut is a faintly Metallica-ish heavy/thrash album that is enjoyable enough: nothing mind breaking really, just some simple but decent songs with the occasional above average riff, it makes for alright background music if you just wanna headbang mindlessly. Their follow-up release is a good improvement though: it loses most of the faint Metallica vibe but becomes more melodic and improves on the riff game. Not all tracks are bangers but the final product is much less generic than the first album, and it could make for a good listen if you're a thrash fan. So, if that's your case, consider giving Justify Rebellion a listen.

Asthma Castle

(Sludge/Doom Metal)

Mount Crushmore (2020)

Asthma Castle is an american quintet that plays some sludgy stoner doom metal. Musically, it's pretty groovy stoner with a dash of blues, harsh vocals, and some really solid, heavy sludge riffs all the way through, usually high/mid tempo but occasionally with some slower moments. Lyrics wise you'd imagine it'd be a bit more comedic given some of track names like "The Book of Duderonomy" or "Brazilian Catbox Incident", but generally speaking they play it serious enough, has more of a laid-back fun energy rather than venturing into pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ territory. It's nothing earth-shattering or anything but it does make for quite the enjoyable listen if you're after some fun, doomy sludge, so if that's your case, consider giving Asthma Castle a listen.

Nedgravd

(Death Metal)

Oslo, Norway

Ascension (2026)

Nedgravd are heavily influenced by an infamous american death metal band called "Infester", who released an album called "To The Depths, In Degradation", a death metal album considered a classic despite some questionable things around the band and its music.

If you're familiar with Infester, you'll find a lot of their trademark sound on this release as well. There isn't that much to say about this debut outside of this though. "Ascension" is good Infester worship and really delivers on the promise of good, ominous sounding death metal with solid drumwork and somewhat technical riffage.
I'd argue that contemporary death metal is quite far away from this style so its certainly worth checking out together with the album that influenced it.
Its a bit rough to listen to but should be just fine for those who are used to extreme metal.

Atramentus

(Funeral Doom)

Quebec, Canada

Stygian (2020)

Atramentus are playing Funeral Doom that is quite unconventional the sense that they're using a formula that combines stilistic elements from a few bands famous within the genre. I am particularly fond of the extended parts using clean vocals and pianos, as this reminds me a tad of how Evoken, another great funeral band, writes their music. Atramentus is certainly on the slower and more convoluted end of Funeral, with the two significant songs both being beyond 15 minutes in length. They probably also borrowed a bit of Demilich influence but that is difficult to explain without going into tangential topics that are too extensive to cover here.

If it is of any importance, Phil Tougas and Antoine Daigneault from Chthe'ilist are on board and one can hear the slight influence from that project in the leads on certain songs.
Highly recommended for Funeral Doom fans and everyone who wants to try something extraordinary that strays from the path traditional releases in that genre set.
