ABOUT Top of the Chart

Video Game History

The history of video games goes as far back as the early 1950s, when academic computer scientists began designing simple games and simulations as part of their research. Video gaming did not reach mainstream popularity until the 1970s and 1980s, when video arcade games and gaming consoles using joysticks, buttons, and other controllers, along with graphics on computer screens and home computer games were introduced to the general public. Since the 1980s, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment and a part of modern popular culture in most parts of the world.

PC gaming has been holding a large market share for decades and continues to grow due to digital distribution.

This group is dedicated to share video game history and discuss the biggest and best games ever made.

Microsoft confirms increased Xbox prices in the UK and Europe
512GB model to increase by £130/€150, 1TB model to rise by £170/€200
Xbox consoles in the UK and Europe will increase from between £130/€150 and £170/€200 following worldwide price hikes announced in late June.

Europe

Xbox Series S 512GB goes from €349.99 to €499.99
Xbox Series S 1TB goes from €399.99 to €599.99
Xbox Series X 1TB Digital goes from €549.99 to €749.99
Xbox Series X 1TB goes from €599.99 to €799.99

Microsoft cited higher storage and memory costs as the reason for continued price rises. It has also discontinued the 2TB model.

"Console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027," the company said in a blog post.

"The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles. Unlike phones, computers, speakers, and other consumer devices, consoles are typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make."

Capcom producer says Resident Evil remakes are providing financial support to develop new games and IP
Masachika Kawata also highlights how remakes enable the team to "continually challenge themselves and hone their craft"
"One of the reasons for creating remakes is producing a new entry in the Resident Evil series every year would be quite an undertaking and a difficult task," he explained.

"Being able to revisit older games and remake them helps Capcom meet that goal of releasing a Resident Evil title each year, but it also allows the team to continually challenge themselves and hone their craft.

Kawata continued: "That’s not to say the remakes are any less important. In fact, they’re just as important as the mainline titles.

"Capcom is lucky enough to have found this cycle that can continue to provide us with the financial resources to create things like new entries in the Resident Evil series and completely new IP like Pragmata. So there is that relationship there."

Over the past decade, Capcom has released three Resident Evil remakes, most recently Resident Evil 4 in 2023. The next remake, Resident Evil Veronica, is scheduled for release next year.

Analyst data also indicates that anticipation for new entries in the Resident Evil franchise like Requiem and Veronica increases sales and player engagement with earlier games.

"Maybe there are a lot of people out there who would like to see more spinoff titles or such," Katawa added.

"But honestly, the team is giving everything it has right now, working on things like our new entries like Requiem or remakes. At the moment, that's where our efforts [are] being focused. We are so focused on pouring our energy into that, I don't think there’s a whole lot left right now for a spinoff."
