APA $600,000 National Team Championships
held August 21-29, 2009
Las Vegas, NV.

The culmination of weekly APA League play is the APA National Team Championships, held annually at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This event consists of three individual National Team Championships:

Open 8-Ball - This event is open to any combination of men and women, with a 1st Place prize of $25,000.

Ladies 8-Ball - This event is open to ladies only and offers a 1st Place prize of $10,000.

Open 9-Ball - This event is open to any combination of men and women, with a 1st Place prize of $15,000.

Competition is played on 3 ½ x 7 - ft. tables, using a modified single elimination format that allows every team the opportunity to play at least twice before being eliminated. All nationally qualified teams receive $350 when they register at the event.

During the National Team Championships, the APA hosts MiniMania events, preregistered 8-Ball Doubles, 9-Ball Doubles, and Masters Championships, as well as the Wheelchair Challenge. MiniMania and preregistered events combined pay out more than $200,000 annually.

Qualifying for National Team Championships

Beginning at the Local Level, teams compete weekly with other area teams comprising a division (6-16 teams). There are three sessions of play every year, Summer, Fall and Spring. When each session has been completed, a playoff is held to determine which team will advance to the Local Team Championship, which is held after the conclusion of the Spring Session. Teams that win at the Local Team Championship qualify to compete in the National Team Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tina Pawloski is an APA member from San Diego, Calif. She is a Skill Level 7 in 8-Ball and a Skill Level 9 in 9-Ball. Tina began playing pool in 1992 and has 8 years of experience playing in the APA. After competing in a number of Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) qualifiers in 2005, she earned a spot in every WPBA Classic Tour event in 2006. After spending a year on tour, Tina decided professional pool wasn’t for her and returned to San Diego and began playing in the APA again. She has spent the past few years helping fellow members of the San Diego APA improve their game through instructional lessons.

APA Northeast Challenge Crowns Reigning Champion

For the second year in a row, the Portuguese Throat Choppers of Ludlow, Mass., were crowned champions at the APA Northeast Challenge. The team took home a 1st Place prize of $4,000. As Runners-up, Sudden Death of New York, N.Y., received $2,000 in prize money. Ball Breakers of Jackson Heights, N.Y., and On Stroke of Bronx, N.Y., finished in 3rd place, each taking home $1,500. The tournament took place at Big Shot Billiards in East Windsor, Conn., July 31 – August 2. This modified single elimination 8-Ball event was open only to APA members in the Northeast Region.
