Rövşən Lənkəranski, born Rövşən Rafiq oğlu Canıyev on January 27, 1975, in Lankaran, Azerbaijan, was one of the most notorious Azerbaijani criminal figures of his era, known in the underworld as a vor v zakone (thief-in-law). His descent into the criminal world began at the age of 17, when his police officer father was murdered by members of a criminal gang, and in 1996, Rövşən avenged his father's death by shooting the killer directly inside a courtroom during a trial — an act for which he received a relatively lenient two-year sentence after the court took his psychological state into account. Over the following years, he rose to become one of the most powerful criminal authorities among the Azerbaijani diaspora in Moscow and Ukraine, eventually gaining control over Azerbaijani business networks in Moscow after the deaths and arrests of rival figures in 2003. He survived multiple assassination attempts, including a stabbing in Dubai in 2012 and a shooting attempt in Turkey in 2013, and was widely suspected of involvement in the killing of the influential criminal boss "Ded Khasan" in 2010. His life came to a violent end on August 18, 2016, in Istanbul, Turkey, when unknown assailants opened fire on him as he exited a hotel on Barbaros Boulevard, leaving him with nearly 20 gunshot wounds; he died shortly after at the Florence Nightingale Hospital.
