Still Learning
Sambhavi

9,016 hours. Still learning. Still playing.

I’ve spent 9,016 hours on Counter-Strike.

That number is honestly a little insane when I think about it.

It means 9,000+ hours of the same maps, the same angles, and the same situations. Thousands of rounds, ridiculous clutches, stupid deaths, incredible teammates, terrible teammates, and enough "one more game" moments to completely lose track of time.

I started playing because I enjoyed the game. After all these hours, I still do.

But playing Counter-Strike for this long has also taught me something that has very little to do with Counter-Strike itself.

People can be extremely toxic.

If you’ve played competitive games for long enough, you already know what I mean.

You miss one shot. *"Are you serious?"*

You lose one duel. *"Uninstall."*

You make one bad call. *"Idiot."*

You bottom-frag for a few rounds, and suddenly someone is questioning your entire existence.

And somehow, the person who has been screaming into their microphone for the last ten minutes thinks they are the one helping the team.

It gets worse. People throw racial abuse, sexist comments, and personal insults. They attack someone’s voice, their accent, their country, their family, or their appearance. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the game anymore. Someone just wants to hurt another person because they are angry.

I’ve heard plenty of it:

* "Trash."
* "Are you stupid?"
* "Kill yourself."
* "Uninstall the game."
* "Go back to your country."

Then there are the insults so creative and unnecessarily personal that you almost have to wonder where someone found the time to invent them between rounds. It would be funny if people weren’t actually being affected by it.

That’s the part I don’t understand. You don’t know the person on the other side of the screen. You don’t know what kind of day they had, if they are exhausted, or if they simply made one mistake in a video game. You only know that they missed a shot, and somehow that becomes a reason to abuse them.

I’m usually the quiet player. I don’t use my mic much, and I don’t enjoy screaming across a microphone every time something goes wrong. I prefer simple communication:

* "Two mid."
* "Rotate."
* "Low HP."
* "Nice."

That’s enough. If someone misses, I’m not going to spend the next two rounds reminding them that they missed. They already know. Trust me.

I’m not pretending I never get angry. Of course I do. I’ve played enough Counter-Strike to know what being tilted feels like.

You lose a 1v1 you should have won. Then another. Then your teammate accidentally blocks you. Then someone dry-peeks with the bomb. Then somebody starts typing essays in chat while the round is still going.

At that point, yes, I’m annoyed. Very annoyed. But there’s a difference between being frustrated and deciding that another human being deserves abuse because your match isn’t going the way you wanted. That difference matters.

The funniest thing about toxic players is how quickly they forget that everyone makes mistakes.

The same person calling someone trash after one missed shot will whiff an entire magazine two rounds later. The player screaming *"WHY DIDN’T YOU ROTATE?"* will be the one standing on the other side of the map when the bomb gets planted. And the person typing *"0 kills uninstall"* somehow forgets that it’s a team game.

Nobody plays perfectly. Not me. Not you. Not the guy screaming in voice chat. Nobody.

After 9,016 hours, I still make stupid mistakes. I miss easy shots, make bad decisions, and sometimes panic. Sometimes I completely misunderstand what the enemy is doing and walk straight into something I should have seen coming from another universe.

It happens. That’s Counter-Strike. You play thousands of rounds because you know the next one might be better. You learn, you adapt, and you queue again.

What I don’t want to do is make someone hate the game because I was angry for thirty seconds. There are already enough people doing that.

* Someone shouldn't have to mute their entire team just to enjoy a match.
* Someone shouldn't have to be afraid to speak because their voice might become the next target.
* Someone shouldn't have to apologize for being new.
* Someone definitely shouldn't have to tolerate racial, sexist, or personal abuse just because they clicked "Play."

Competitive gaming is supposed to be competitive. Talk trash if everyone is having fun with it. Celebrate the clutch. Laugh at the ridiculous death. Get annoyed at the game or complain about the matchmaking. Say *"what was that?"* after your teammate does something completely insane. That’s normal.

There’s a line, though. Once the goal becomes humiliating another person instead of playing the game, the whole thing becomes pointless.

I don’t expect every lobby to be friendly. That would be unrealistic. People get angry, lose their temper, and say stupid things. But I do expect people to remember that there is another human being on the other side of the screen.

That person is trying to play too. Maybe they’re good, maybe they’re terrible, or maybe they just started. Maybe they have 10,000 hours. It doesn’t really matter. They’re still a person.

For me, being a good teammate matters more than having a perfect scoreboard. I’d rather play with someone who says *"sorry, my bad"* than someone who drops 30 kills while spending the entire match insulting everyone.

Give me the imperfect teammate who stays respectful every single time.

I’m not here to prove that I’m better than everyone else. I’m here because I genuinely love the game.

I like the feeling of finally hitting a shot I’ve been practicing. I like learning a new smoke. I like winning a round because everyone actually communicated. I like those completely ridiculous matches that you remember days later. And I like playing with people who can lose a game without turning into a completely different person.

9,016 hours later, I’m still learning, still improving, and still making mistakes. I am still getting tilted sometimes, still laughing at stupid deaths, and still saying "one more."

But I’m also trying to leave every lobby a little better than I found it. If someone makes a mistake, I won’t abuse them for it. If someone plays badly, I won’t make their night worse. If someone clutches, I’ll say "nice."

It costs nothing.

There is already enough abuse in gaming. Enough toxic chat, racism, sexism, and personal attacks. I don’t need to add to that.

I’d rather be the quiet teammate who plays the round, learns from the mistake, and queues again. Because at the end of the day, it’s still just a game.

9,016 hours on record.

Still learning. Still improving. Still playing.

Be competitive. Be passionate. Just don't forget there's a person on the other side of the screen. 🎮
